Freida Dyson was born in Bearsden, Glasgow and has lived in a variety of locations from the Outer Hebrides to Australia. However she spent most of her childhood & teenage years in Glasgow and adult life in Cambridge. Her mother's family came from the Isle of Lewis where Freida lived for four of her early years.
For thirty years Freida lived in Cambridge, England with two years in Tasmania and Canberra, Australia. Her home is now in Galloway which she loves for the outstanding beauty of land and seascapes, the rich history and eclectic artistic and craft renaissance that is taking place here. It is also easy to access the Highlands and the Islands of Scotland which provide much of the inspiration for her works.
Drawing has been a great drive for her from an early age and for years she attended life drawing classes at Glasgow School of Art and with various groups in Cambridge. While her son was young, she obtained a degree in Archaeology and Anthropology from Cambridge University. Subsequently she worked full time, kept up her life drawing studies and started painting in the 1970's. She has maintained her interest in life drawing and studied oil painting for two years with Sam Mullen at the Crichton campus, Dumfries.
She has taken part in various group exhibitions in Cambridge during the 1980s/1990s (where she also had two successful solo exhibitions with the majority of paintings sold on each occasion) and exhibits in various galleries across Dumfries & Galloway.
She is a member of a number of art societies and institutions and was President of the Dumfries & Galloway Fine Art Society for 2007/2008. Her paintings are held in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, USA and the UK. Examples of her past and current work are on display in the Arts of Alba studio/gallery in Castle Douglas.
Her third Cambridge Solo Exhibition was held at Emmanuel College, Cambridge from 27 to 29 March 2009.
She also exhibited her work for several years during the Dumfries & Galloway Spring Fling plus (July/August 2009) in the Scottish Showcase Gallery, Kirkcudbright and the (VAS) Visual Arts Scotland exhibition (September/October 2009) at the Gracefield Arts Centre in Dumfries Her next solo exhibition will be in the Plumed Horse restaurant, Edinburgh in November 2009.
